When Westside hit TV screens last year as a prequel to Outrageous Fortune, it was an instant success. Part of that success was due to the period-perfect 1970s West Auckland setting that had been portrayed. 50 years on
June 19, 1966 may well be the most successful day in New Zealand motorsport history. Why? Because that’s the day that legendary Kiwi drivers Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme, and Chris Amon brought the Ford GT40 home first in the 24 Hours of Le Mans event — an event that not only put the cars on the worldwide stage, but the drivers, too. With that event now almost exactly 50 years on, we delve into how it all unfolded.
